Soul, 2016

12/12/2016

For so many reasons, this year has been one to remember. Personally, it was a great one. I turned twenty five, I absolutely love what I do, I'm living in one of my favorite cities on the planet and I am surrounded by healthy, inspiring and loving friends and family. Not a whole lot to complain about in the small area that my life takes up on this planet. However, the older I get, the wider my eyes are opened to the reality of the world and the fact that there are many things that need not only our attention and help -- but our soul. I know that my heart beats for those moments of connection -- that instant, deep, unexplained understanding of this is why we're here. It's often fleeting, but as I age, I have learned to hold on to those moments. To write them down, to photograph them, to remember them and make sure I live my life in constant pursuit of that feeling.

This year, I want to offer four photographs. Four moments in time. Four scenes that resonate with me for certain reasons and will most likely change over time. Four images that for you, may mean something entirely different. Each photograph represents an organization that has taken my heart and my soul this year. Two of these organizations are ones that I've been passionate about for years and the three others have only recently come to my attention thanks to suggestions from friends and family. All proceeds of the sales of these prints will be donated to the causes they're attached to.

Last Light | Mammoth Lakes, CA | 2016
Last Light was taken off of the side of the road in 8 degree air as the last bit of sunlight dipped behind the Western ridges of Mammoth Lakes. The Sierras are a special place for many and have served as the focus for many famous photographers throughout history. To me, this photograph represents the setting and rising of the sun. Regardless of the contents of the day, the sun will still set and the sun will still rise. The organization I'd like to pair with this piece is The Trevor Project -- a ray of light in a world of darkness for many. The Trevor Project provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention for everyone, especially LGBTQ+ youth. They're the best friend that some kids don't think they have or deserve and they're actively spreading love, positivity and an open mind. Suicide prevention is one of the causes that is closest to my heart and I'm so thankful for organizations like this that are giving a voice to many who need one. Time + Space | Santa Ynez, CA | 2015
Time + Space is named for a theme in my favorite film, Interstellar: in a world where we view moments and memories as linear, the reality is that only one thing can transcend time and space -- love. Regardless of what you believe lies within or beyond the stars we see in our night sky, I'd like to think that love is there. I personally view it as a glimpse into some sort of heaven, somewhere where our loved ones who have passed on are watching over us. I'd like to pair this with two organizations that share the same goal -- The March of Dimes and Made for a Miracle. One larger and one smaller organization that are both actively helping bring awareness, support, aide and love to mothers, fathers and families with premature babies. Sometimes these babies are here on our earth for just a few moments in time but the impact they have is immeasurable. Proceeds for Time + Space will be equally split between the two organizations. Click here to donate by ordering a print: Order this Print

Of the Sea | Malibu, CA | 2015
This one is for all of the animal lovers out there and this is a photo of a rock. That's it. I love this photo, I love this beach and I love animals. The organization for animals that I love the most is called Vet Ranch and I found them on YouTube last year and have been obsessed with them ever since. They take in homeless animals, nurse them back to health and get them adopted. They are such a caring, smart and selfless group of vets and I love being able to watch what they're doing online. The funds from their donations go directly toward helping the animals you see in their videos and each one has me bawling like a baby from pure joy. Check them out and know that the proceeds from this print of a rock are directly going to helping an animal heal and find a loving home. Click here to donate by ordering a print: Order this Print

Hope | New York City, NY | 2016
I've only been to New York City twice and both times were post-911. I couldn't help but stare up at each building and wonder what it was like before the city -- and our country -- went through what it did. I knew I wanted to have one organization in this project that focused our American soldiers and this awesome recommendation came from a friend, veteran and fellow photographer. The Farmer Veteran Coalition works to connect veterans with jobs in the agriculture and farming industry. They've created several different programs that have helped over 3,400 veterans in the past year alone -- 72% of which are post 9-11 veterans. To me, this is what the heart of America is about -- helping those who have served our country be able to thrive in it. Click here to donate by ordering a print: Order this Print

I'll be hand mailing the print(s) to the address you enter for shipping. All proceeds from each sale will be donated to the organization represented by the photograph(s). If no other organization is mentioned, the proceeds will be donated to the organization that the photo represents. If you'd simply like to donate to a cause mentioned above, head over to their websites and feel free to donate on your own -- I would be thrilled! If you can't donate but still want to help support any or all of these causes, please share the link to this blog post or the link to the cause you love the most. Sharing is spreading awareness. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me directly at jes@jesworkman.com.
Thank you for taking the time to read through this and thank you from the bottom of my heart if you decide to support one of these incredible causes by purchasing a print from me. I'm not a doctor or a soldier or a mom but I hope I can at least continue to share the selfless acts of all of these incredible people that make these organizations possible. Thank you, truly, from the bottom of my soul.                      -- Jes
